History of Shafer

Shafer was founded in the 1850’s and named after an early settler, Jacob Shafer. Hay, ginseng, and potatoes were some of the early crops produced. The railroad running from Taylor’s Falls to the Twin Cities made Shafer a thriving town during the turn of the century. Car dealerships, a creamery, a feed mill, a general store, taverns and cafe’s made up early Shafer.

Population

Shafer’s population is 1238. Chisago County continues to be one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Minnesota!

Education

The Chisago Lakes School District #2144 services nearly 3400 students of Chisago City, Lindstrom, Center City, Shafer and Taylors Falls. Students and staff strive for excellence in education including achievements both inside and outside the classroom. Chisago Lakes has a comprehensive K-12 program where students explore mathematics, science, communication, business, vocational education, physical education, art, social studies, music and modern languages. Additionally, adults are offered basic education and enrichment courses, and with the Twin Cities in such close proximity to Shafer there are numerous, valuable opportunities for ongoing higher education for adults. Housing

Shafer has over 350 housing options, from single family homes, town homes, mobile homes and apartments. Shafer offers a small town country settings, which makes our city a desirable place to live.

Workforce

As of August 2023, Chisago County’s available labor force is 30,535 which is about half of its population. The top five industries in the county are services, retail trade, manufacturing, government and construction.

Location

Shafer is conveniently located on Minnesota Highway 8, just 16 miles east of Interstate 35 and 46 miles northeast of Minneapolis-St Paul. Shafer is 6 miles from beautiful Interstate Park on the St. Croix Valley River and 13 miles from the Wild Mountain Recreation Area.
